British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
