This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
