Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
